File a Statement of Abandonment of use of Fictitious Business Name
Who Can File
- Persons or business entities doing business under a fictitious name who wishes to no longer do business under a previously filed fictitious business name statement.
- B&P 17922(a) states that a statement of abandonment shall be filed. A Statement of Abandonment must be filed on an active Fictitious Business Name Statement. When filing an abandonment for a FBN statement that contains multiple business names, the customer may abandon one or more of those business name(s). Publication is required.
- The FBN statement expires when the registrant files a statement of abandonment- B&P 17920(c).
- Effective January 1, 2024 [AB 878 and SB 1526 (2023-2024) any registrant who files a fictitious business name statement, statement of abandonment, or statement of withdrawal is required to include a “business mailing address” instead of a residence address.
NEW Online Filing
Registered business owners (registrants) can now file their Abandonment of Fictitious Business Name (FBN) completely online! Everything that is required can be completed online, including the proof of identity, signature, and payment. Filing online includes a $10.75 service fee.
Once the filing is completed, the registrant will receive the Abandonment of FBN filing by email.

In-Person Appointment
Appointments can be scheduled up to three (3) weeks in advance.
Before you can make an appointment you must complete the Online Business Filing and Registration System. When you complete the application and receive your confirmation number you can then make an appointment.

Mail Request
Mail filings are only processed at our Norwalk Headquarters. District offices do not process mail requests.
All mail requests must include a completed Abandonment of Fictitious Business Name Statement generated through the Online Business Filing and Registration System and a notarized Affidavit of Identity form.
